Join us to discuss a short reading on spirituality: chapters 1 & 2 - “The Sense of the Ineffable” and “Radical Amazement” - of the book Man is Not Alone: A Philosophy of Religion by Abraham Heschel.

Access a pdf here. These chapters align with PDF pages 11-20.

Verse 101 of Surah Yunus states:

Say, ‘Observe what is in the heavens and the earth.’ But neither signs nor warnings avail a people who have no faith.

Q. 10:101

In our daily lives we often get distracted by what appears most concrete to us: the material world. We have a tendency to ignore the Divine signs that are all around us and, indeed, within us. These two chapters invite us to come face-to-face with our inner sensation of the “the true meaning, source, and end of being”—what he calls “the ineffable.”

The chapters are rather short, but it may take a moment to get comfortable with his writing style. Don’t let that discourage you. Make connections between the book and Islamic concepts you are familiar with. Take note of lines that inspire you and share them with the group; we hope we can learn from everyone’s personal insights. And take note of the passages that seem hard to grasp - that’s what the discussion is for!

We look forward to seeing you then
