Conceptual Groundwork of Converge: The complex and profound nature of conversion creates many hurdles and challenges. As part of the vision of Sacred Roots, we hope to help people along their way through friendship, a spiritual space, and opportunities to learn. We hope to help people travel through three major levels on the infinite path toward God:

  • Transformation - the shift from one moral vision to another is the first and most essential component in life. It involves the breaking with a portion of the former self. It is an embrace of, submission to, and voyage upon a new path in life - to testify that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is God’s messenger

  • Growth - after the initial transformation, growth takes time, energy, and effort. Growth comes at three important levels after conversion:

    • Intellectual - to deepen one’s knowledge of the conceptual and practical ingredients that lead to a faithful life - theology, ethics, and law as understood through the Qur’an, the Prophet, and his family

    • Spiritual - to live a life in fulfillment of the tradition. To live a life deeply rooted in knowledge and cognizant of God’s presence

    • Communal - to build bonds of love and trust with other Muslims and to build families

  • Synthesis - transformation and growth sometimes lead to ruptures within the self or in regards to one’s culture or society. Synthesis occurs when the individual is able to allow Islam to be an effective filter through which one’s personality, inclinations, and culture are purified but not abandoned. Ideally, this stage nurtures the growth stage and deepens the transformative experience. In the end, the individual uses the spiritual light of Islam to see and shape their self and their society—ultimately becoming a beacon of light through which society is changed.
